In the wake of the catastrophic flash floods that devastated southwestern Connecticut on August 18, Rotary District 7980 has stepped up as a beacon of hope and action, leading a robust disaster relief operation that continues to impact countless lives. As families and businesses struggle to recover, Rotary has galvanized resources, partnerships, and volunteers to address the urgent needs of the affected communities.
A Lifeline for Families in Crisis
With an impressive $37,000 raised through local fundraising efforts and a Rotary International disaster relief grant, Rotary District 7980 swiftly mobilized to provide emergency assistance. The district partnered with The Outreach Program to package and distribute 10,000 nutrient-rich meal kits, each designed to feed up to six people. These kits, featuring easy-to-prepare meals like macaroni and cheese and rice and beans, have been a vital source of sustenance for families facing food insecurity.
In collaboration with TEAM Inc., $10,000 has been directed to provide direct assistance to flood-affected families, ensuring that help reaches those who need it most. Additionally, an innovative book collection drive is underway to rebuild the Southbury Library, which suffered extensive damage during the floods.
A Collaborative Effort
Rotary’s efforts have been amplified by partnerships with organizations like the American Red Cross. On Monday, November 18, volunteers from both groups will join forces for a major food distribution event at Southbury Plaza. This event underscores the critical need for ongoing support as the region continues to recover.
“The first phase of our food distribution effort proved the urgent need in our community,” said Phil Ucci, Chair of Rotary District 7980’s Disaster Response Task Force. “The Seymour-Oxford Food Bank distributed 6,264 meals in just 15 days, demonstrating the severe food insecurity our neighbors are facing.”
District Governor Robert Friend highlighted Rotary’s role as problem solvers and catalysts for change: “This initiative exemplifies how Rotarians are People of Action, mobilizing quickly and effectively in times of crisis. By working together with the American Red Cross and The Outreach Program, we’re showing that when communities face challenges, Rotarians take action.”
Sustained Relief and a Call for Support
While the immediate response has been impactful, the need for continued support remains. Rotary District 7980 has extended its focus to address the compounded challenges posed by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which have further strained resources in the region. Community members are encouraged to contribute to the Rotary District 7980 Disaster Relief Fund to sustain these vital efforts.
